Best Manga categories

Shonen – (action, adventure, sports..) leads the Manga category ranking with 1459 ELO points and wins 82% of its duels, ahead of Seinen – (violence, thriller, suspense..).

The 124 ELO points separating Shonen from Seinen at the top reflect their distinct appeal, but the ranking's sharpest divide appears lower: 213 ELO points separate Seinen – (violence, thriller, suspense..) in rank 2 from Shojo – (romance, drama, fantasy..) in rank 3. This gap suggests readers align strongly with either mature thriller narratives or romantic drama, with little middle ground between the two. Josei – (psychology, society, sexuality..) follows at 1079 ELO with a 42% win rate, carving out its own space for psychological storytelling. At the bottom, Kodomo – (friendship, dreams, magic..) sits at 1005 ELO with a 28% win rate after 92 duels, indicating that manga aimed at younger audiences hold limited appeal among this community of voters.

The ranking draws from 228 duels across 37 players who compared these 5 manga categories, updated on 12 October 2026. Whether Shonen's dominance reflects a genuine preference for action-driven storytelling or simply the category's broader reach remains an open question. How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
