116 ELO points separate Star Wars: "I am your father!" from The Lord of the Rings: "You shall not pass!" at the top of the Iconic movie quotes ranking, after 15327 duels.
The gap between the podium's first and second positions is clear: Star Wars: "I am your father!" claims 1475 ELO points with a 77% win rate across 176 duels, while The Lord of the Rings: "You shall not pass!" trails at 1359 ELO. Third place goes to Toy Story: "To infinity and beyond!" with 1329 ELO over 272 duels. The bottom of the ranking reveals a sharp divide in taste: where anglophone blockbusters dominate the top, French cinema occupies the lowest positions. La Vérité si je Mens: "Tell me Patrick, what's this thing for? – What's it for? Nothing, he's stupid, it's art..." sits at rank 39 with 979 ELO, just below Breathless and Les Morfalous. The community prefers the mythic declarations of Hollywood franchises over the irreverent wit of French dialogue.
This ranking draws from 15327 duels judged by 109 players across 39 contenders, updated on 10 October 2026. Each voter chose between two quotes in head-to-head matchups, and those choices built the ELO scores that determine every position here. The result is a snapshot of collective memory: which lines stick, which fade, and which franchises wrote themselves into the language. Cast your own vote and shift the order.

How this ranking is computed
Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
